Handy Winter Painting Check List

  • To avoid lingering paint odors, use low-VOC or no-VOC paints from a trusted manufacturer
  • Keep rooms and walls at a moderate temperature (no less than 40 degrees) so the paint will create a solid bond with the walls

  • If a professional paint crew will be doing the work, lay down canvas drop cloths between the front door and rooms to be painted so as to prevent mud or other debris from being tracked inside
  • Keep pets and small children away from the painting areas to avoid smudged or spilled paint and painted little ones
  • While you don’t need to open up the house to dispel odors, it will be helpful to keep painted rooms well-ventilated to speed up the paint-drying process
  • Make sure paint is dry before re-populating rooms with furniture and other items
